Whether you choose to have a church wedding or a ceremony at City Hall is totally your choice. Ultimately, the bill will be yours. You should know that you have options. You may choose to have a basic ceremony now and save for a big reception a year or two later. The most important thing is the committment of the bride and groom to each other. Let’s face it; if the ceremony is huge and the reception extravagant, the bill will be the couple’s responsibility. On the other hand, if the ceremony is small and basic and the reception is small the burden of a big bill at the start of the rest of your life together will be a non issue.
My admonition would be to navigate carefully and choose a basic ceremony with minimal wedding ceremony items such as a few elegant unity candles, a favorite outfit and your immediate family and friends. There is no need to skimp on these basic items, since they are central to the wedding ceremony. Go easy on the number of witnesses. You will have time to invite all your friends and relatives to a later ceremony and reception. The most important thing right now is that you are fully committed to the one you truly love and with whom you want to spend the rest of your life. Remember, you will have plenty of time for a full occasion at a later date. There should be no big rush to do things perfect this time around. Now go ahead; give yourselves permission to do what we just discussed!
