One of the most desired accessories for any bride is a  pearl necklace with matching earrings. These accessories seem to possess the special ability to light up the face of any bride. The combination of a pearl necklace and Pearl earrings seem to instantly transform the features of the bride. Brides seem to have an inbuilt ability to glow on their special day. It is commonly believed that the power of positive thinking causes brides to glow. The body seems to produce special substances that are stimulated by the happiness they feel on their wedding day.

The other commonly repeated statement seems to be that ‘nobody has ever seen an ugly bride’. Maybe the traditional white outfit coupled with the spirit of expectation causes a beautiful transformation in the eye of the beholder.
Whether these explanations are true or not it certainly gives us an explanation for a phenomenon we barely understand. One thing is sure and that is; most individuals love to attend weddings and they rarely go to see the groom.  Everybody wants to see the bride.  When it becomes common knowledge that you were in attendance at a wedding; the question you are most likely to be asked is; “what was the bride wearing”.   It  doesn’t  seem to matter if the groom was even there.   It is a cultural practice. No harm meant, I’m sure.

Preserving Precious Memories

My friend Edith was always great at organizing any and everything.  When it came to her wedding reception all her friends expected nothing less when we saw the elegant signature vase that Edith used as centerpiece for each of the several tables prepared for her guests.

The signature vase was tastefully arranged with long stem red roses. The outside surface of the vase was reserved for the signature and well wishes of all the guests sitting at each table.  This has become a more practical option for preserving precious memories.  Memories that seem to transcend time.  It is believed that the signature vase will hold these valuable memories for years without smudging or erasing them.

If the signature vase is any indicator of the strength and durability of Edith’s marriage; I would say that the forecast looks quite good.  She has the substance to work hand in hand with her husband Dennis to make their marriage last for a lifetime.

My Sister’s wedding on the Beach

Three years ago my sister Joanne and her husband to be, Curt, decided to get married in Jamaica on the lovely strip of beach located in an area called Negril.  Negril is just a location that overlaps the parishes of Westmoreland and  Hanover.  One can actually stand in one location on the beach and view miles unending of grey and white sand beach.  My husband and I  were delighted to be a part of the wedding party.  We were scheduled to meet my younger sister Shelly and my nephew in Montego Bay.  We boarded our Air Jamaica “Champagne” flight in Boston MA and soon made ourselves quite comfortable.  We chatted with our neighbors who sat across from us on our flight.  Before we knew it we were landing in Montego Bay.

The ceremony on the following day was impeccably perfect.  Even though it was  held  on the beach, it was quite organized and there were quite a few instances in which my sister made sure that some of the classiest wedding ceremony gifts were quite visible, this was especially true of the ring pillows.  The wedding party was carefully positioned by the photographer who creatively shot several pictures.  The last picture was barely taken when the clouds seemed to burst open and all members of the wedding party went scurrying for shelter.  The rain fell for about five minutes, then ceased long enough for us to freshen up in preparation for the reception.  The food was delicious and the event was delightful.  We had a great time!

Big Church Wedding or City Hall?

Whether you choose to have a church wedding or a ceremony at City Hall is totally your choice. Ultimately, the bill will be yours. You should know that you have options. You may choose to have a basic ceremony now and save for a big reception a year or two later. The most important thing is the committment of the bride and groom to each other. Let’s face it; if the ceremony is huge and the reception extravagant, the bill will be the couple’s responsibility. On the other hand, if the ceremony is small and basic and the reception is small the burden of a big bill at the start of the rest of your life together will be a non issue.

My admonition would be to navigate carefully and choose a basic ceremony with minimal wedding ceremony items such as a few elegant unity candles, a favorite outfit and your immediate family and friends. There is no need to skimp on these basic items, since they are central to the wedding ceremony. Go easy on the number of witnesses. You will have time to invite all your friends and relatives to a later ceremony and reception. The most important thing right now is that you are fully committed to the one you truly love and with whom you want to spend the rest of your life. Remember, you will have plenty of time for a full occasion at a later date. There should be no big rush to do things perfect this time around. Now go ahead; give yourselves permission to do what we just discussed!
